About CAWLS
The Canadian Association for Work and Labour Studies (CAWLS) was founded on April 20, 2013 at what is now Toronto Metropolitan University. At that meeting, a group of roughly 30 work and labour studies scholars from a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds adopted a constitution and elected a founding executive, with Dr. Stephanie Ross as President. The Association held its first annual conference in May 2014 at Brock University in conjunction with the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Our mandate includes a wide variety of goals aimed at furthering labour research and workers’ rights in Canada and around the world. They include:

Fostering high quality, interdisciplinary labour studies research and teaching

Building labour studies networks and community for researchers and students

Recognizing and celebrating the best labour studies scholarship
