CAWLS-Home-Page-Call-for-Proposals-2

Hosted at Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario, during the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, May 29 – 30, 2014.

The conference organizing committee invites submissions for participation in the inaugural conference of the Canadian Association for Work and Labour Studies. The committee welcomes proposals for single papers, multiple paper panels, roundtables and/or workshops. In keeping with the Congress theme, “Borders without Boundaries”, the participation of researchers in academic, union and community settings is encouraged.

Potential topics might include:

• The organization of migrant and undocumented workers
• The intersection of race, gender and class in workers’ experiences, struggles and organizations
• Youth, students and labour unions
• Job insecurity, precarity and changing labour markets
• The challenges of neoliberal globalization and austerity for workers and their organizations
• New forms of worker organizing
• Workers in private services (e.g. domestic workers, live-in caregivers, etc.)
• Threats to organized labour’s traditional strongholds (public sector, manufacturing)
• Alliances between the labour movement and other social movements
• Labour internationalism
• Changes in labour law and labour relations
• Labour and political strategy

The above list is not exhaustive. We welcome proposals that highlight the past, present and future of work and labour studies and seek a final conference programme reflective of the broadest range of methodological, theoretical and disciplinary approaches.
