Scholarship, Activism, Public History: Celebration of the Work and Leadership of Craig Heron
May 26-27, 2017 (the Friday & Saturday just in advance of Congress 2017)

For more than 30 years, Craig Heron has been one of Canada’s foremost labour historians and an inspiration in the fields of working-class history, labour studies, and Canadian history.
Many of you know Craig’s numerous publications, including Working in Steel, Booze, and Lunch-bucket Lives, which explore workers’ lives on the shop floor, in the community, in the union hall, at leisure, and in local politics. Others are more familiar with the work he has done building the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre in Hamilton and putting work and workers at the centre of public history. Still others know Craig through his academic leadership – his student mentorship, work as department chair and VP External of the York University Faculty Association, and presidency of the Canadian Historical Association. Throughout his career, Craig’s work as scholar, teacher, CHA president, public historian, activist and labour leader has made him a mentor, supervisor, colleague and friend to many of us.
On the eve of Craig’s retirement, we are pleased to celebrate his extraordinary career through a conference dedicated to the themes that have animated Craig’s scholarship and activism. The conference will be held on May 26-27, 2017, at York University. There is a hotel on campus, as well as residence rooms that can be reserved.
We are seeking papers that either present new research or reflect on Craig’s influence and mentorship. We anticipate at least five key themes will emerge: the workplace; leisure and community; politics of class and gender; public history; activism in and for the university.
We hope for a wide range of participants from the university and the community, from all stages of career, and from people who know Craig well and those who work in the areas of his research. Each presenter will have 15-20 minutes, and we will allow plenty of time for discussion.
